Dr. Laurent Bozec

I am a biophysicist who studies the structure of collagen.

As an academic based in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto, my research often lends itself to dental health issues. However, due to the translational nature of my lab's research and our passion for curiosity and collaboration, our work is much broader.

Career in a nutshell

I am a Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto.

I run a large, busy research lab, teach courses in graduate research methodsand dissemination and dental materials science, and run the 3-Minute Thesis Competition in our Faculty.

Before moving to Canada, I was Head of Research at the Eastman Dental Institute at University College London (UCL), UK.

Mentoring and training future scientists

As an academic, educator, and mentor, I am passionate about developing young minds and preparing them to lead the next generation of clinicians and researchers.

Over the last 15 years, I have devoted my career to my students and academic institutions. I have adopted my former university (University College London) teaching framework, created a nurturing environment, and engaged in the strategic planning of education with a particular focus on graduate research students.

As a teacher, mentor, and supervisor, I endeavour to ensure all my students participate in the research process and the creation of knowledge supported by my academic and research expertise. My aim is for them to understand the “edge of knowledge” and learn how to deal with uncertainty. Through this integrated approach, they will develop their critical, independent thinking skills, become confident problem solvers, be well versed in communicating complex information, and become experienced at working in a team.

With these skills, the graduates I teach will excel in the workplace and be highly valued contributors across all walks of life. To ensure this, I have an open approach to my students undertaking activities beyond their course components and respect these career and personal defining choices.
